Lenses

Our lens types

With the right design and an awareness of optical phenomena, we can create highly complex light distribution solutions from the lenses. All lenses are unique and created for a specific purpose. Below are a few examples of how different lenses are used.

TIR lenses (spot distributions)

TIR lenses collect and direct light based on the principle of total internal reflection. The light rays pass through the lens’s entrance surface, are then reflected by the TIR surfaces, and finally exit through the lens’s outer surfaces. This creates a focused beam with high intensity, efficiency, precision and minimal light spill. TIR lenses are often rotationally symmetrical and produce a well-defined circular light distribution. They are commonly used in retail applications.

Fresnel lenses (omnidirectional distributions)

Fresnel lenses consist of concentric, inward-facing ring-shaped lens segments. Their optical performance is comparable to that of conventional lenses with a similar shape or curvature, but they are significantly thinner and lighter.

Because the lens is divided into segments, refraction occurs in multiple steps. Its optical performance is governed by the angles of these segments. The rear surface of the lenses is often textured to soften any visible irregularities in the light distribution and to ensure a more homogeneous light pattern. Fresnel lenses enable efficient and controlled light management.

The image shows a combination of a Fresnel lens and the reflector used in the Pleiad luminaire.

Freeform lenses (asymmetrical distributions)

Freeform lenses are often used in street and road luminaires, where complex, interconnected surfaces are required to create precise and often highly asymmetrical light distributions. The aim is to meet requirements for illuminance, uniformity, energy efficiency and visual comfort. To reduce glare from street and road luminaires, for example, we develop our own AGC lenses (Advanced Glare Control).
