What is Human Centric Lighting?

Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is a holistic way of exploring the effects of light on people. It can be summed up as artificial indoor lighting aimed at reproducing the daily outdoor rhythm of natural daylight. Our circadian rhythm can be improved by lighting designed to match the motion, intensity, and colour of sunlight.

People need light to see, but also to ensure that our circadian rhythm and our physiology function normally. Light affects many aspects of our wellbeing: everything from our mood and sleep to our productivity and visual perception. It is light which governs our natural circadian rhythm. When light levels or our circadian rhythm is disrupted, such as by working nights or travelling across time zones, our internal body clock does not adjust well to the change, and our bodies are affected, resulting in e.g. sleep disorders or stress disorders.

Primary focus areas in research into HCL are schools, healthcare, and care of the elderly, where many positive results have been achieved from lighting research in various countries. Lighting at workplace such as offices and industrial areas still requires further scientific study to establish clear correlation and evidence.
