Classrooms

The classroom is a dynamic place, where many teaching activities should be able to be carried out. It is also a place of tranquillity and security that promotes learning. With our lighting solutions, our aim is to be involved in the creation of an inclusive learning environment.

General lighting recommendations

All learning environments can require their special configurations, but there are general recommendations that apply to all spaces. Our solutions are planned to meet all standards with 500 lx at reading and writing areas to facilitate visual tasks. For the light level to be sufficient in classrooms, it is recommended that several luminaires be installed. In addition, providing each luminaire row with sensors for daylight-responsive control can reduce energy consumption, but students will continue to receive plenty of light through the addition of incidental sunlight.

Also be sure to adjust the number of luminaire rows and properties according to the size and area of use in the room, partly to avoid excessive variations but also to obtain good ambient lighting. When working with shape and colour in classrooms, for example, colour reproduction is important. The standard value on the colour rendering index is Ra 80, but an art room may need a value of over 90. Instruction in crafts, imagery, technology and chemistry may require custom lighting.

On the ceiling, the standard stipulates 100 lx. To achieve the positive effects reported in Fagerhult's studies, we advocate 300 lx with indirect light in the ceiling. For walls, the standard stipulates at least 150 lx. We recommend at least 250-300 lx for the walls. Well-lit ceilings and walls provide good ambient lighting and consequently more alert students who perform better.
