The new Danish UN centre is already an iconic building and has been awarded for its green profile. It rises in a mighty star shape on it’s own island at Marmormolen in Nordhavnen, Copenhagen.
The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and Queen Margrethe of Denmark officially opened this eight-armed star shaped UN building in July 2013. This exceptional complex of 45 000 square meters is a workspace for 1200 employees and is the 6th biggest UN complex in the world.
Star to symbolise unity
The building is shaped like a large star that stands for unity, where all the Danish UN functions gather in one building; UNFPA, UNEP, WFP, WHO, UNOPS, UNICEF, UN Women and UNDP. The “arms” represent the different organisations that meet in the centre, symbolising openness at all levels of an organisation that delivers as one.
Green Building award and LEED certificate
When building this UN city started in 2010 it was constructed with a high green profile and a plan to reduce energy usage and lower carbon dioxide emissions. As a result the building received the prestigious EU Green Building Award for New Buildings in 2012.
The UN city is of energy class 1, which means that, it should use less than 50 KwH per square meter per year. Rainwater is used to flush the toilets, all material is locally produced, harbour water cools the building and heat is produced from solar panels located on the roof.
The centre is also registered to receive the highest certificate classification, of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system – LEED.
Linear, pendant and round
A sustainable building needs sustainable lighting and with energy efficient lighting from Fagerhult the UN city building had an answer. Among the luminaires used were the linear recessed and pendant mounted Notor, the discrete lines of custom made Ray* and the round opal Pozzo.
Basic T5’s slim-line dimensions were installed to highlight architecture and the popular downlight Pleiad G2 Comfort gives a general light. Kaptur 3000** is used as functional lighting and it illuminates the 7000 square meter large cellar, where a garage is placed.
From our partner Simes, available to the Nordic regions, the spotlight Focus is used, the wall mounted and discrete luminaire Nanoled and the dynamic lighting of the small Minireef bollard.
