Henrik Gidlund, lighting specialist at the Swedish Transport Administration, had a clear vision of what the system had to provide. “It was incredibly important for us not to lose the security aspect, yet we also wanted to maximise the energy saving.”
To achieve this brief the system is set to 20 % of maximum strength when no-one is present but once occupancy is detected the lighting goes up to 100 %. The sensors in the luminaires communicate using radio waves and light up in groups of seven at a time in the direction and pace at which you are moving. Three luminaires in front of you and three behind you, plus the luminaire level with you. After approximately two minutes, the light levels return to 20 %.
