Fuse protection of HF-ballasts

Miniature circuit breakers for groups of luminaires equipped with an HF-ballast should be sized not only according to the rated current but primarily with regard to the inrush current. The initial inrush current that occurs when the luminaires are switched on can cause the miniature circuit breaker to trip if this is sized incorrectly.

The inrush current is caused by the capacitors in the HF-ballast’s mains filter. The size of the inrush current is not dependent on the output of the HF-ballast’s but its design. The inrush current varies from one HF-ballast manufacturer to another. Due to the characteristics of the inrush current we recommended that miniature circuit breakers with tripping characteristic C are used. If there is a need to connect more HF-ballasts than that stated in column 1 please contact our customer service for exact data.

As manufacturers continuously develop their products the data on this page is not binding. For the latest data, please check with the manufacturers of individual HF-ballast.
