Fagerhult and the environment

Environmentally controlled production process

Fagerhult believes it is also important to reduce the internal climate footprint. All products that are manufactured have “inbuilt” carbon dioxide which comes from the raw material, processing, production and the material and personnel transport. The amount of carbon dioxide also varies depending on where the product was manufactured and the location of the end user..

Fagerhult's internal climate footprint

On average a luminaire manufactured of sheet steel at Fagerhult Habo, which has been transported 800 km to the site, contains 40.4 kg of carbon dioxide. A luminaire manufactured of aluminium contains 48.8 kg of carbon dioxide. Fagerhult's production plants maintain a high standard and manufacturing and takes place using environmentally correct methods, for example, water based pre-treatment and powder coating.

Green energy for production

The choice of energy in connection with production is an effective means to influence the emission of carbon dioxide. We aim for carbon dioxide neutral production and a continuous reduction of energy consumption per manufactured luminaire. Fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas mean for example higher carbon dioxide emissions per kW than electricity generated using renewable energy. Consequently, all Fagerhult's Swedish production plants purchase green electricity from hydroelectric power stations, which contributes towards a saving of approximately 2638 kg of carbon dioxide. At Fagerhult's factory in Habo, heating is produced with the help of biofuel. These actions reduce the carbon dioxide footprint by approximately 7 kg per manufactured luminaire.

Material selection, packaging, transport and recycling

We are considerate in our choice of materials and use no more materials than necessary. During development and manufacture the environmental impact of luminaire materials such as aluminium and sheet steel are compared as well different packaging materials such as plastic, corrugated paper and cardboard. The comparison also applies to the volume of packaging, with a great deal of consideration given to transport. Small, light luminaires and a minimum of packaging material generally contribute towards lower transport volumes. Today 97% of all waste from our Swedish factory in Habo is recycled. All luminaire parts can be recycled and are planned so that dismantling and sorting is quick and easy.

Environmentally certified production

Structured and purposeful environmental work is a prerequisite in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in daily activities. Fagerhult carried out its first environmental certification ten years ago and today the main part of Fagerhult's production plants are certified according to ISO 14001. The installation in Suzhou was opened in 2005 and has also been awarded the Suzhou Industrial Park’s environment prize. Fagerhult's relation to sub-suppliers includes demands on the environmental performance of the business. At the plant in Suzhou a conference is held each year for Chinese sub-suppliers where we inform about the Fagerhult Group’s environmental work and our expectations regard the activities of suppliers.
