Checking the lighting installation

Checking the lighting installation

Checking the lighting installation

1. Analysis of planning objectives

  • Define the activities and the various visual tasks that may be performed in the room at different times of day.
  • Define the lighting requirements with regard to safety, visual needs and the visual experience.
  • Investigate the need for emergency lighting. Define objectives for energy consumption, the environment and maintenance of the lighting installation.

2. Analysis of planning conditions

  • Define applicable provisions, standards, recommendations, and special requirements from clients and users.
  • Define the conditions for lighting the room, the types of workplaces and sizes, as well as the location of these working areas, etc.
  • Select the appropriate lighting requirements according to the collection of tables for the tasks performed in the room regarding illuminance, uniformity, colour reproduction and glare.
  • Are there any special conditions that allow the illuminance to be increased by one or more steps according to the modified requirements?
  • Determine the relevant room surfaces around the workplace that need to be illuminated – ceilings and walls, as well as illuminance for the brightness of the room and good ambient lighting.
  • If illuminance is increased for the working area, the requirements for the brightness of the room should be increased by the same number of steps according to the CIE scale.
  • Define the correct cylindrical illuminance requirement for good visual communication and recognition of objects in the room.
  • Light affects us not only visually but also non-visually, which can affect our well-being, productivity, alertness, etc.Does the lighting need to be varied in light level and colour temperature over the course of the day?
  • Investigate the terms and conditions relating to the design of the premises, furnishings, types of displays , flexibility, daylight and the nature of the premises.
  • Establish the financial prerequisites for the installation and the terms and conditions for maintenance of the lighting installation.

3. Overall planning

  • Investigate the conditions for the interaction between electric lighting and daylight. Check the possibility of sunlight screening.
  • Investigate which light sources, luminaires and lighting systems best satisfy the set aims and conditions.
  • Investigate the options for controlling and adjusting the lighting to increase comfort and improve energy consumption. A control system can, among other things, take advantage of the angle of incidence and take into account presence/absence in the premises. A method for calculating energy consumption's LENI number (Lighting Energy Numeric Indicator) is described in EN 15193-1.
  • Carry out an overall harmonisation with regard to other installations, colour schemes and furnishings.

4. Detailed planning

  • Evaluate the various lighting systems from a light technology, visual and financial point of view.
  • Establish the lighting system’s optimal maintenance factors, taking the maintenance conditions into consideration.
  • Perform a financial evaluation by calculating the life cycle costs of the investment, operation, and maintenance.
  • Compare the selected lighting systems with regard to other installations, colour schemes, furnishings and chosen equipment.

5. Documentation

  • Should be drawn up as below with supplements according to the client’s wishes.
  • Installation drawings, including controlling and assembly instructions as well as associated lists of light sources and luminaires.
  • Lighting calculations and any visualisations that verify under which conditions the system complies with the specified demands.

Document the calculation prerequisites and the lighting installation's maintenance plan.
